“I Don’t Do Ups.” Tribute to a Great Comedian

Laughter Really is the BEST Medicine.

Whenever I feel really low, especially about my weight (if you’ve read some of my previous posts you’ll know), I turn to YouTube for some comedy. Not just any comedy, but the comedy stylings of late comedian John Pinette.

He was truly a comedic genius. Not only did he understand the trials and tribulations of being heavier set, he was able to turn it into comedy gold.

“I have gotten a trainer. I went to the gym and I saw him and he said ‘Give me a sit up,’ and I said ‘Oh nay, nay.’ I go ‘I don’t do ups: sit ups, push ups, pull ups. I do do downs. I will sit down, I will lay down. Blackjack I’ll double down. Give me a cheeseburger, I’ll wolf that down. But no ups. Ups defy gravity, that’s a law, I obey the law”

I never tire of hearing the same material over and over. With each performance he alters it slightly, either with wording or how it is delivered. Every time it is still funny.

I laugh so hard I have tears. These are the good kind of tears. When you’re feeling low, this is the kind of tears you need, the best kind of medicine.

He has appeared 6 times at the Just For Laughs festival in Quebec, performed stand up in many places around the world, done 3 comedy specials, has 3 published books, appeared on Broadway and appeared in a number of films and television programs.

Sadly, he passed away at the age of 50 on April 5, 2014.  He is greatly missed and rightfully so.

Thank you Dr. John, you cure what ails me.
